Each year on the weekend of the Super Bowl, the William Baker Festival Singers offer mid-winter concerts on each side of the state line.  If football is not for you, the performances offer a respite from Super Bowl frenzy.  If you are a football fan, rest assured that our Sunday concert will end soon enough for you to be in front of the television with snacks in hand.

The first season (1985-1986) of the Festival Singers culminated with a performance of the Brahms EIN DEUTSCHES REQUIEM.  As William Baker retires as Music Director & Conductor of the WBFS-Atlanta following the 2014-2015 season, it is fitting that his last masterwork performance with the original Festival Singers ensemble be the one that has been such an important part of the ensemble’s history.

The original Festival Singers, then called “Gwinnett” Festival Singers, held its first rehearsal on February 26, 1985.  On the 30th anniversary of that event members and alumni from all Festival Singers ensembles, in addition to The DeKalb Choral Guild and The Gwinnett Young Singers will gather in Atlanta for a gala celebration of this storied musical tradition.  The performance will be followed by a reception in honor of Dr. Baker’s nearly 40 years of service to the Atlanta community.

One of our holiday CDs, A FESTIVAL FOR CHRISTMAS, was recorded in Atlanta and Kansas City. In celebration of the recording now released on iTunes, one of our classical radio stations in Kansas City has created a one-hour holiday special around selections by the William Baker Festival Singers and the Northside Young Singers found on this recording.  It is hosted by Patrick Neas, music critic for The Kansas City Star, and it features conversations with Patrick and Dr. William Baker interspersed with the music. ?The holiday special will broadcast three times during the coming week.

Zimria Festivale Atlanta Inaugural Concert

The William Baker Choral Foundation is excited to announce our newest ensemble, Zimria Festivale Atlanta led by Amy Thropp, Music Director & Conductor.  Their inaugural concert will be the first night of Chanukah, December 16th, at 6:00 pm with dinner following.  Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Salads, Latkes and Sufganiyot will be served. Candle lighting and games will follow dinner!

The performance will be held at the Congregational Beth Shalom, located at 5303 Winters Chapel Road in Atlanta.  Advance ticket purchasing requested by contacting the office at Beth Shalom (office@bshalom.net, 770-399-5300 or BethShalomAtlanta.org).  Tickets include concert and dinner.  Adults are $10 and children under 11 are $7.

Zimria

Zimria Festivale Atlanta is the newest ensemble of the Choral Foundation.  Under the leadership of Music Director Amy Thropp, the 25-40 chorus will be selected by audition, and will specialize in music of the Jewish tradition and the works of composers of Jewish heritage.  The 2014-2015 season will feature two short term projects before the group begins year round activity in 2015-2016.  Rehearsals are Thursday evenings in Atlanta, GA.
